How to Install Aftermarket Wheels

How to Install Aftermarket Wheels

Upgrading your truck’s wheels is a fast way to boost style and performance. Here’s a step-by-step guide to safely remove your stock wheels and install your new aftermarket set.

What You’ll Need

  • New wheels (double-check fitment for your year, make, and model)
  • Proper lug nuts (may differ from factory ones)
  • Torque wrench
  • Socket set and breaker bar
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Anti-seize compound (optional)
  • Work gloves and safety glasses

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Prepare Your Truck: Park on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and chock the wheels that will remain on the ground.
  2. Loosen Lug Nuts: Loosen (but do not remove) the lug nuts on the wheel you’re replacing using a breaker bar while the truck is still on the ground.
  3. Lift the Truck: Use a jack to lift the truck at the manufacturer’s recommended points. Secure with jack stands.
  4. Remove the Wheel: Unscrew and remove the lug nuts. Carefully pull the wheel straight off the hub.
  5. Clean the Hub: Remove any rust or debris. Apply a light layer of anti-seize compound if desired.
  6. Install the New Wheel: Align the new wheel with the hub and slide it on. Hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  7. Lower the Truck: Carefully lower the truck back to the ground.
  8. Tighten Lug Nuts to Spec: Use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s recommended torque. Tighten in a star pattern for even seating.
  9. Double-Check: Recheck torque after driving 25–50 miles.

Quick Tips

  • Always follow your wheel and truck manufacturer’s specs for torque and fitment.
  • If your new wheels require different lug nuts, use only the correct type provided or recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Never use impact tools for final tightening—always use a torque wrench.
  • If in doubt, consult a professional installer.
